PRISON LEGAL NEWS

Prison Legal News is a monthly newspaper dedicated to protecting Human Rights.  Paul Wright, its Editor, was incarcerated in Washington state for 17 years, during which time he started a newspaper which at that time was about 10 pages long.  It is closer to 50 pages these days and has a national readership of 1000 people, 70% of whom are prisoners.  Although the business office is in Seattle, Mr. Wright lives in Vermont.
There is not extensive coverage in the media about prisoners' issues.  Prison Legal News is the only national magazine devoted to doing so.  Contributers include legal scholars, social scientists, and prisoners themselves.  The paper publishes original research on issues that include prison litigation, mental health research and other issues of vital interest to the prison population.  "The Nation" describes this paper as "the monthly magazine for and by prisoners that is to prison watchers what "The Financial Times" is to capitalists."  The Vermont Conference Prison Justice Group subscribes to this journal, and it is available at the Conference Resource Center to anyone interested in checking it out.
