Vermont Issues

The House Institutions and Corrections Committee allocates the funds that the state borrows every year and oversees the Department of Corrections. This week the committee continued to hear testimony from the Commissioner of the Department of Corrections regarding the Corrections budget and requests. The Commissioners testimony seemed somewhat confusing in that on one hand he talked about bringing approximately 150 prisoners back to Vermont from out of state and on the other hand he talked about cutting state employees within the correctional system, closure of Probation and Parole offices and closing the St. Johnsbury prison while at the same time requesting to build more beds in Newport and Springfield. The committee will continue to look at the Department of Corrections budget requests while doing the final markup of the capital bill.
